Why should women travel to the Arctic?
With its amazing wildlife, Indigenous peoples and natural history, the Arctic is one of the top destinations on our “30 Places for Women to Travel to in 2024″ List. It’s a photographer’s and naturalist’s dream, with panoramic fjords, incredible species like sea birds, whales, bears and caribou.
But where is it and why should women travel to the Arctic? We’ve invited polar expert Franny Bergschneider, from Wild Women Expeditions to teach us about the Arctic. Wild Women Expeditions is the largest women’s adventure travel company in the world, and creates safe, empowering, and exhilarating ways for women to escape the ordinary and explore the world. Wild Women started as an all-women canoe tripping company in Canada in 1991 and is now in over 30 countries across every continent.

Fun fact: Did you know: the North Pole is warmer than the South Pole? The Arctic is mostly ocean surrounded by land, while Antarctica is mostly land surrounded by ocean. So while significant portions of both are covered in sheets of ice, the water underneath the Arctic ice cap (which sits only about a foot above the water) can trap heat and help warm the surrounding air. The average summer temperature at the North Pole is 32°F. At the South Pole, it’s -18°F.

Fun fact: The Arctic Circle passes through the Arctic Ocean, the Scandinavian Peninsula, North Asia, Northern America, and Greenland, and the land within the Arctic Circle is divided among eight countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, the United States (Alaska), Canada (Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut), Denmark (Greenland), and Iceland (where it passes through the small offshore island of Grímsey).
