Travel creators choose JourneyWoman as recipient for first-ever award
JourneyWoman has been selected as the winner for the 2024 inaugural “Best Travel Blog” Award by the Travel Bloggers Exchange (TBEX) at the TBEX North America conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on July 12, 2024. This category celebrates the written word, honouring travel writers for their eloquent storytelling and insightful perspectives. The TBEX Travel Creator Awards, presented by Travelpayouts, are designed to recognize and honour the exceptional talent and contributions of individuals and entities shaping the landscape of travel content.
The Award was given out by Rick Calvert, CEO, who says the decision was based on the number of votes received and a review by a panel of judges, which reviewed 15 other travel finalists in addition to JourneyWoman. Travel writer and solo traveller Jen Ruiz (Jen on a Jet Plane), who was also the keynote speaker at TBEX’s North American conference, accepted the award on behalf of Carolyn Ray, CEO, JourneyWoman, who was unable to attend due to pre-planned holidays in Ireland. In her comments, Ruiz thanked TBEX for the recognition and noted that the award is even more special given JourneyWoman’s 30th anniversary as the first travel website in the world for solo women.
“When Evelyn Hannon started JourneyWoman 30 years ago, she had a vision to connect women, to help them build confidence in themselves to take that first step into solo travel — and that vision holds true today,” Ruiz said. “Evelyn also inspired many others to start their own travel businesses and be entrepreneurs, to follow their dreams. This award shows the power of an idea, and how it can be sustained over time.”

This award also shows that organizations like TBEX recognize the power of older women as a key demographic in travel. I hope the travel industry pays attention to this.”
Ray continued, “I also want to acknowledge the other finalists in this category for their hard work and dedication, through particularly challenging times. Keeping a travel blogging business going through the pandemic deserves its own recognition. I’m honoured we were included among so many incredible travel bloggers and writers.”

After more than 25 years online, JourneyWoman’s website still ranks in the top 20 travel websites (#16) in the world since its creation in 1997. In 2020, the entire website was rebuilt and redesigned, based on feedback from JourneyWoman readers. The original JourneyWoman website was built in 1997, had over 3,000 pages and thousands of articles. In a survey completed by almost 2,000 women, readers said they wanted more information on solo tips, safety, cultural etiquette, more companies in our Women’s Travel Directory. There was also a strong desire for JourneyWoman to advocate for more responsible and sustainable ways to travel. Our readers have profoundly influenced the evolution of the JourneyWoman website.
